The student came to Krakow and couldn’t afford an apartment, so he lived in a car. He lives on PLN 15 a day

20-year-old Patryk moved to Krakow to study. When he decided to continue his studies and leave Opole, he realized that it would not be easy. He didn’t have money to rent an apartment and didn’t get into the dormitory. He decided not to give up on his dreams because of this and moved in with his car.

Patryk wants to be a painter. For this reason, he moved from his hometown and settled in Krakow, where he studies painting at the Pedagogical University. Although he seems to be like any other student and no one at the university knows what his reality is, his story is different from the norm. In an interview with “Uwaga” he talked about why he has been living in a car in a parking lot for a month.

“I have a daily limit to spend”

When arriving in Krakow, Patryk had about PLN 600 with him. To make ends meet, he set himself a daily spending limit. According to his calculations, he must live on PLN 15 a day. “I often buy a jar of peanut butter, which gives me energy for a long time. I’ve been skipping dinner lately,” he told a reporter for “Uwagi”.

Although he browses apartment offers every day, hoping to find something that will suit his budget, renting a room is unrealistic at current prices. “I try to maintain the mask of someone who lives a normal life. However, this is homelessness. I wake up in the morning, I brush my teeth in the park. I take a shower and go to the gym where I have a membership. At the moment I can’t afford a laundry room,” he said. He took up a job as a courier and hopes that his situation will improve next month.

The price of making dreams come true

The price he pays for making his dreams come true is high, but it does not take away from his optimism. “I want to be a painter, I’m passionate about it. The most difficult thing for me is preparing for classes and creating papers for university in the car. Sometimes I have to paint something on a large format and it doesn’t fit in the car,” he emphasized.

He also added that before he made the decision, he was afraid of criticism. He was aware that someone might suggest that he take a year off and save money for his studies first. But he didn’t want to wait. “I had no money, but I really wanted to study painting. I didn’t have a guaranteed place to stay, so I decided to buy a car,” he said.
