Homer Simpson won’t choke Bart anymore. “Times have changed”

Homer Simpson and his son Bart had more than just father-son love for each other. There was always a lot of tension between them, which was reflected in Bart’s absurd jokes and his father strangling his son. End of it. There will be no such violence in “The Simpsons”.

“” are full of histories of various forms of violence. However, the cartoon, which is not aimed at children, is now moving into the 21st century. 33 years after the premiere of the first episode, Homer Simpson will break the vicious circle of domestic violence and stop strangling his son.

“The Simpsons”. Homer Simpson ends up choking Bart

The slightly dysfunctional Simpson family has so far resisted the passage of time. And it’s not just that Bart is stuck, still 10 years old, Simpson will forever be a power plant worker and diligent student Lisa will forever fight windmills for a greener tomorrow. The Simpsons was also mentally stuck, which was finally noticed.

One of the inherent elements of each episode of the cartoon were Bart’s jokes aimed at the head of the family. This was followed by a short sequence from Benny Hill, ending with Homer capturing Bart and choking the boy as punishment. The scene was entertaining to the point of tears, but for some time now it’s been a bit less fun. The producers noticed this and stopped choking in the last episodes aired.

In the 35th season of “The Simpsons”, in the third episode of “McMansion & Wife”, Homer Simpson explains his strong handshake:

You see, Marge, choking the boy paid off! – he says to his wife. But then he adds: I’m kidding. I don’t do this anymore. Times have changed, he says with a bit of pride.

However, Homer’s transformation and his entry into modernity did not happen just like that in one episode. A few seasons earlier, Homer had experienced first-hand what he was doing to his son – he was strangled as a lesson to learn “what it’s like to be young, small and scared.” The shock therapy worked and viewers noticed the lack of suffocation:

Today we call it “violence against children”…

I knew my man Homer would eventually learn. He’s a smart guy!

It only took him 36 years, but he finally understood – we read on Twitter.

“The Simpsons” unsinkable despite its problems

“The Simpsons” is one of the last cartoons that has been produced for such a long time. The series has been struggling with the problem of adapting to the modern world for several years. There have been repeated accusations of promoting racism (“The Problem with Apu”, 2017), violence and misogyny. Some episodes were removed after broadcast due to complaints. However, the show is slowly learning from its mistakes and adapting the latest episodes to the requirements of the modern world.
