Scientists from the Center for Scholars & Storytellers in California recently conducted a “Teens and Screens” study, which shows that young viewers are not interested in sexual content. The study involved 1,500 people aged 10 to 24.
What do the research results say?
The results clearly show that as many as 48%, i.e. almost half of the respondents, stated that sexual content is not needed in plots and . The attention of young viewers is more attracted to those productions whose plot is devoted to the lives and problems of characters similar to themselves. 51.5% of surveyed teenagers said that they would prefer to watch films and series about friendships and platonic relationships. In turn, 39% of respondents indicated that there should be more asexual characters in the plots of new productions.
The results were analyzed by Dr. Yalda T. Uhls from the Center for Scholars & Storytellers:
“While it’s true that teens want less sex in movies and TV shows, the study actually shows that they want different kinds of relationships reflected in the shows they watch. We know that young people are suffering from a loneliness epidemic and are looking for role models in the art they consume “Although some creators use sex and romance as a shortcut to building relationships between characters, Hollywood should understand that teenagers want stories that reflect the full spectrum of relationships,” the scientist commented.
The researcher also explained that the very fact that almost half of the respondents consider sexual content unnecessary indicates that films and series lack characters who build relationships on deeper relationships.
