The writer and translator Pilar Adon (Madrid, 1971) has been awarded the 2023 National Narrative Prize for her work Of beasts and birds (Galaxia Gutenberg, 2022) and for “its great originality, beauty, poetic richness and strength of language”, according to the jury’s ruling made public this Monday.

The jury wanted to highlight the story narrated by Adón that “it is as fantastic as it is close and recognizable”, and that it has been “written in an impeccable style that at times borders on lyricism”, so “it manages to immerse the reader in a disturbing, suffocating and dreamlike atmosphere”.

Likewise, the jury highlighted that “Pilar Adón, with her singular voice, outside of fashions and trendsand with a sublime capacity to imagine, he builds atmospheres and environments of extraordinary nature that are absolutely captivating.”

The award, granted by the Ministry of Culture and Sports, It is endowed with 30,000 euros.

The jury was chaired by María José Gálvez Salvador, general director of Books, Comics and Reading of the Ministry of Culture and Sports; and Jesús González González, deputy general director of Promotion of Books, Reading and Spanish Literature, has acted as vice president.

An extensive work

Adón is the author of around twenty works between narrative and poetry. Among her works, the novel also stands out The ephemerals (Galaxia Gutenberg, 2015) or his book of stories The submerged life (Gutenberg Galaxy, 2017). In addition to original books and translations, in his extensive work he has published stories, poetry and criticism in magazines and literary supplements. This National Narrative Award joins two others that the writer has already received for the same work, such as the Francisco Umbral Award or the Cálamo Award, both received in 2022.
