I am a believer and I don’t like it when people talk to me about superstitions or superstitions. I simply don’t believe in them and I don’t care what happens when I do something I shouldn’t. I believe that all these practices based on the belief in the existence of supernatural powers that can bring misfortune to someone or protect them from it are fiction. Everyone is responsible for themselves and their actions. However, my family is constantly guided by superstitions and whenever an opportunity arises, they take it easy and suggest what should be done in a given situation. This was also the case recently when my grandfather died.
“I was shocked that this had to be done just to prevent grandpa’s soul from making itself at home and settling there for good.”
It is not easy for me to write about the funeral of such a loved one, but I believe that what was done in my home is beyond human understanding. The family decided to hold the rosary at the family home. When it was all over and the body of the deceased was transported to the funeral home, the grandmother ordered that everyone present had to perform a certain ritual. After my grandfather’s funeral, we knocked over chairs in the house. The entire village exorcised the ghost. I was shocked that this had to be done just to prevent my grandfather’s soul from making itself at home and settling there for good. If that happened, then someone would be able to threaten us all the time.
Best of all, when grandma ordered these activities, no one protested. Everyone in the village confirmed that it was normal. Even though I grew up in this culture, it just felt strange. When I think back to that moment, I get chills. I am writing this letter to ask others if they have heard about this superstition. It’s still stuck in my head.
Funeral superstition. If the flowers on the grave are removed too early, the deceased may not rest in peace
In our culture, bouquets should remain on the grave for 4-6 weeks from the day of the funeral. It was believed that in this way the deceased was given time to say his final goodbye to the world. According to beliefs, the soul takes 42 days to leave. Nowadays, not everyone follows this tradition, because the flowers start to wither and smell bad after just a few days. Heavy rains, snow and heat do not help maintain their good condition. For this reason, the family decides to clean the grave after a week or gradually throw away the flowers and leave only those that still look and smell good on the monument.
