Produce authorizes second fishing season in full exploratory capture

The second industrial anchovy fishing season will begin this Thursday, October 26, according to ministerial resolution No. 358-2023 issued yesterday by the Ministry of Production (Produces). The maximum established quota is 1.6 million metric tons (MT).

This decision was already known since October 20date on which a screenshot of this document was circulating on social networks and possibly since the first days of October, since companies were already making calls for personnel in anticipation of this scenario as reported by this medium.

That is, hours before the results of the exploratory fishing that began on Saturday the 21st were obtained and which is supposed to be what the authorities should base themselves on to take measures regarding this campaign.

According Antony Apeñoa marine biologist at CooperAcción, had to wait for the exploration to conclude as was done in August, where the results that there was a high incidence of juveniles led Produce to announce the cancellation of the first season.

The path taken by the highest authority in the fishing sector reveals how great pressure is exerted by the industry to fish, but not only from this direction, but also comes from the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF), which just a couple of days ago admitted that the country is in recession.

There is clearly pressure first from the fishing industry for wanting to extract the resource no matter what, and on the part of the Ministry of Economy, for wanting in some way or another to reverse (the figures),” Apeño maintains.

The specialist adds that the weather conditions for next year would also be unfavorable, which is why the decision to have a second fishing season at any cost has been pushed, regardless of the impact it may have on the resource. “We hope that this second fishing season does not bring the resource further down. Now, we also have to take into consideration that in a few months, conditions will surely be much more intense, as a result of The boy”, he said.

Let us remember that the industry was looking for a short season of 45 days in the last months of the year, with which they projected to land 1.2 million MT of anchovy to produce 300,000 MT of fishmeal and 31,000 MT of fish oil. In this way they would generate US$792 million in exports, according to Macroconsult.

The closures began

The General Directorate of Supervision, Inspection and Sanction of Produces has already established the closure of three areas due to a high incidence of juveniles from Sunday, October 22 until the last day of exploratory fishing (October 25).

The closures range from Punta Bermejo to Végueta in Huacho, and from Pacasmayo to Punta Guañape (Trujillo).
