The 69th edition of the La Obra Invitada program, focused on Picasso’s final stage, is presented in Bilbao

Between 1966 and 1972, a year before he died at the age of 92 in his residence in the French town of Mougins, Pablo Picasso He displayed a marvelous energy that fueled, among others, a long series of works with which he transferred the legendary figure of the musketeer from the 17th century to the 20th century. More of 450 frames and drawings show this character popularized by the famous novel The three mousquetaires (1844) by Alexandre Dumas, deconstructed and reconstructed again in multiple interpretations according to Picasso’s logic.
In it Picasso Yearwhich commemorates the 50th anniversary of death of the painter, the Santander Foundation and the Muse Fine Arts of Bilbao present a new edition (69) of the veteran program The Guest Work, focusing on this intense final stage of the genius and on this particular iconography that art historians have interpreted as his unprejudiced and very free alter ego.
The Museum of Contemporary Art has joined this notable occasion Artium Museum (Vitoria-Gasteiz), with Mousquetaire à la pipe (1968), the only painting by Picasso in public collections in the Basque Country. In his honor, he is accompanied by Bust of a Knight III (1967) from the Santander Bank collectionprogram sponsor.
This is not the first time that the Banco Santander Foundation collaborates in the program with its own works. Since its inception in 2001, works by El Greco, Van Dyck, Gregorio Fernández, Zurbarán, Lucas Cranach the Elder and Cristina Iglesias, among others, have been seen in the museum on 12 other occasions, to which is now added this extraordinary Picasso . On the other hand, Artium Museoa is also a regular collaborator of the museum, following a line of work that promotes joint work between the different Basque museum institutions.
