It all started in 1998. It was then that Marcin “Siwy” Siwek and Łukasz Wółkiewicz brought to life . Initially, their studio was an apartment in a block of flats at Lotników Street in Płock, where they recorded songs on a tape recorder. Later, the team was expanded by three more people: Jacek Paczkowski, Gmura and Krzysztof Bączek, who took the pseudonym Chris Toffson. – We recorded the songs in my closet, with a microphone wrapped in a sweater, and then recorded them on an AMP. Siwy took these recordings to the Płock radio station, which started playing them, Toffson said in an interview with .
From recording in a closet to a professional studio. In 2003, the band Jedno Osiem L was at the peak of its career
The breakthrough in their career came only in 2003. It was then that they made their debut on the recording market with the album “Wideoteka”, which a year later achieved the status of a gold record. Also causing a sensation was the song “How to forget”, which took the biggest radio stations in Poland by storm and did not disappear from the top of the charts for many months. Interestingly, his text was written spontaneously in a dozen or so minutes, sitting in front of a block of flats. – This is how it worked out for me because I met this girl, I fell in love, she did too, then she fell out of love, I wanted to too, but I couldn’t – they said in the same interview.
However, popularity had not only its upsides, but also its downsides. Ultimately, three of the five members left the band because they were unable to cope with the criticism and hate they received. – We pretended it didn’t affect us, but somewhere inside it hurt a little. It was hard to bear at one point, because it was a sine wave, from total fascination with the band to total hatred – they said years later in the program.
Since then, Jedno Osiem L has been composed of Łukasz Wółkiewicz, who creates the lyrical layer of the songs and takes care of the vocals, and Chris Toffson, responsible for the compositions and production. They have played hundreds of concerts, performed on the largest stages in Poland and received many prestigious awards, including: two Eska Music Awards statuettes and the Popcorn Microphone.
One Osiem L is still active in the music industry. What’s up with its members?
Although the popularity of the band Jedno Osiem L faded slightly in the following years, they did not stop creating. Their discography has expanded over the years to include three more studio albums. Apart from their debut album, they also released “Słuchowisko”, “Nowy Folder” and “Dekada”, but none of them repeated the success of their first album.
However, music is not the only activity of Wółkiewicz and Toffson. Although they give regular concerts and keep recording new songs, they also have other activities that give them a reliable source of income. What do they do every day? – I worked in the studio all the time, producing for various artists and bands. In addition, I still work in the medical industry, I am a manager in a medical facility in Warsaw. And Łukasz works in logistics – said Chris Toffson in an interview for o2.pl. – I had to learn a trade. I manage a fleet of trucks – confirmed Łukasz Wółkiewicz. You can’t find information about former band members on the Internet. All we know is that Siwek tried to make a solo career, even releasing the album “Welcome to Poland” in a duet with Nowator, but he was not successful.
