is responsible for the two earlier parts of “Alien”. Unfortunately, both his “Prometheus” and “Alien: Covenant” were not particularly warmly received by critics. Numerous reviews stated that they were far from the best old horror films from 1979, 1986 and 1992, the first of which was directed by Scott.
In “Alien: Romulus”, the director took care of the production side and left the film management to a young Uruguayan, Fede Alvarez. He showed the finished painting to the master. What did he hear?
Ridley Scott has already watched “Alien: Romulus”
Fede Alvarez didn’t have much choice – Scott is the producer of his Alien film, so he obviously had to see “Romulus”. What’s more, the cult director is not known for being gentle when expressing his opinion:
I wanted him to see the movie before everyone else. And everyone warned me that Ridley was really difficult. Difficult especially when something has something to do with his films. He was harsh on Blade Runner 2049, which I thought was a masterpiece. However, he had a problem with this film, I think because of his work on the originals. I asked him about the new “Top Gun”, he replied: “Meh, the original is my brother’s, and the new one… eh.” I was sure I wouldn’t convince him, said Alvarez in a conversation with Guillermo del Toro at the DGA Latino Summit 2023.
Alvarez didn’t just show the director’s rough cut of the new Alien to Scott. He personally came to listen to his comments.
I had to be there, look at him and hear what he had to tell me. Even if it was “you destroyed my legacy.” I wanted to look him straight in the eye, not hear someone say, “Ridley says…”. And then he walked into the room and said, “Fede, what can I say, it’s f***ing perfect!”
All we can do is take Ridley Scott’s word for it. “Alien: Romulus” does not have an exact release date yet. We won’t see the film in cinemas until next year.
“Alien: Romulus” – a new part of Alien is coming
Fede Alvarez has already made several films, including the very well-received “Don’t Breathe” in 2016. He had been in contact with Ridley Scott for several years, to whom he even sent a preliminary script for the new part. Finally, in 2021, Scott offered him a job as a duo – Alvarez would direct, and he would produce and raise funds.
After long months of working in secret in Hungary, we finally learned a little more details. Apart from the working title “Alien: Romulus”, it is known that this part of Alien will have no connections with the previous ones – although, of course, the common denominator will be the xenomorph itself, which likes to nest in human bodies whenever it has access to them in a distant galaxy. Additionally, the human crew will consist mainly of young people, whom the Alien will capture and infect.
