The solemn ceremony of the Princess of Asturias Awards, which will be held next Friday, October 20at the Campoamor Theater in Oviedo, although throughout these weeks, the coastal region of Spain has been holding numerous events and events in tribute from the winners of this edition. In total, eight awards are given but this year, there will be several absences because two winners died last summer after being awarded their respective awards and will be represented by their family and friends.

Haruki Murakami

The Japanese writer and translator Murakami is, according to specialists, a disturbing writer, with a prose in which influences from authors such as Dostoevsky, Dickens, Capote or Vargas Llosa can be seen. He stands out for his prose that is translated into more than forty languages ​​and is characterized by its intimate, sometimes surreal tone, in which the everyday world of modern Japan and references to pop culture come together. In fact, at the beginning of his writing career he ran a jazz club and this is reflected in his work, with music being a decisive element in his books.

His most notable work is ‘Noruwei no mori’ title taken from the Beatles song ‘Norwegian Wood’ and which in Spain was published as ‘Tokyo Blues’. His book also highlights ‘Kafka on the shore’ and ‘1Q84’.

Nuccio Ordine

Nuccio Ordine, philosopher, writer and expert in literary theory, He is recognized worldwide as one of the greatest experts on Renaissance thought and literature, and, specifically, on the figure of the Neapolitan humanist Giordano Bruno. The Italian is the author of his outstanding books on this subject: ‘La cabala dell’asino. Asinità e conoscenza in Giordano Bruno’ (1987), essays and articles in the field of literary theory and aesthetics. The academic died last June after being informed of the award in communication and humanities.

Hélène Carrère d’Encausse

The one awarded with the Social Sciences award will be the historian and teacher Hélène Carrère d’Encausse. The French specialized in USSR and Russia receive this award in full war between the country led by Putin and its neighbor Ukraine. She began her career as a History teacher at the Paris 1 University and in 1969 she joined SciencePo as a professor and researcher, where she directed the Soviet Studies department of the International Research Center and developed much of her career. Medicines for Neglected Diseases Initiative

The international cooperation award goes to the non-profit organization Drugs for Neglected Diseases Initiative (DNDi). It is an organization whose main objective is to discover and develop treatments for diseases considered “forgotten” or neglectedand for others related to poverty and underdevelopment

Marry’s Meals

Mary’s Meals is a non-profit organization based in the Scottish town of Dalmally, whose main objective is to provide a daily meal to school children in their educational center, in eighteen of the poorest countries in the world. Founded in 2002 by Magnus MacFarlane-Barrow, its origins date back to 1992, when the Bosnian war generated in Magnus and his brother Fergus the need to help people affected by the conflict, for which they organized a campaign to collect help of all kinds, which a few weeks later they personally took to Bosnia. The organization will be awarded with the Princess of Asturias Award for Concord 2023.
