In 2005, Ewelina Bałdyga was 21 years old. A woman at the University of Management in Warsaw. May 30th was going to be like any other day. First, Ewelina went shopping with her mother, and then to classes. After finishing them, she was supposed to return home, but she never arrived. Around 6 p.m. she went to the parking lot and walked towards her car. Suddenly, a man got out of a white Ford, choked the woman, dragged her into the car and drove away. Everything was captured on nearby cameras. There was also a witness who reported the incident to the police. The worried family looked for Ewelina near the university, and the next day the services were notified about her disappearance. The car in which the kidnapped woman was most likely transported was soon found. He was offside.
The father received a call from the kidnappers. They demanded a ransom
A few days later, the worried family was waiting for a breakthrough in the search. On the evening of June 5, someone called Józef Bałdyga’s wife from an unknown number. Ewelina could be heard crying in the background, asking the family to do everything not to kill her. The kidnappers hung up and later Józef received a text message.
Collect so you have 500,000. euro. Once you collect it, send a text message to this number and we’ll sort it out. If you do as you say and the police are not there, you have my word that he will be in the house as soon as possible. Nobody touched her, we are not rapists.
The kidnappers also called the 21-year-old’s partner, Łukasz. He also heard Ewelina’s voice asking him to do what the kidnappers demanded. Józef collected money and, together with Łukasz, tried to transfer the collected amount. They were deceived for many hours until the kidnappers finally changed their minds and the money was not transferred. They suspected that the police knew about the meeting. They demanded that the ransom be doubled under the threat of exploiting Ewelina.
They cut her hair. The family failed to recover the abductee
Some time later, the kidnappers directed Ewelina’s family to the place where they found a bag with her cut hair. On June 28, 2005, they contacted the woman’s partner and again ordered him to pay the ransom. This time it worked and Łukasz gave the money to the masked man. The family was again informed to donate another ransom, but it was no longer possible to collect more money. Then contact with the kidnappers was lost forever. Charges were brought against two men – Grzegorz K. and Tomasz R. They were accused of complicity in the deprivation of liberty, abduction and holding Ewelina Bałdyga hostage. The trial lasted from January 2017 to September 2022. The District Court in Warsaw found the men guilty of abducting and detaining the woman, as well as causing Ewelina’s family to unfavorably dispose of property in the amount of PLN 567.5 thousand. euro. Both were sentenced to 15 years in prison and fines. The judgment is invalid. Ewelina has not been found yet, but she has not been declared dead.
