The parliamentary elections changed the balance of power in the government. Due to the possible loss of power by PiS, there will also be changes in the public media. TVP journalists were already afraid of the new reality before the vote, but now the atmosphere at the headquarters has become even more tense. The situation is similar in Polish Radio.
TVP journalists are counting on a miracle: We are locked up and devastated
According to the Wirtualne Media portal, the most likely candidate for the new president of Polish Radio is Kamil Dąbrowa. He talked about his predispositions, among others: Jan Ordyński from the program board of the mentioned medium. At TVP, the current president is Mateusz Matyszkowicz, his deputy is Janusz Daszczyński, who was replaced by Jacek Kurski at the beginning of 2016.
Will the new government give up over PLN 2 billion from the budget for TVP? Media expert Krzysztof Grzegorzewski from the University of Łódź in an interview withkultura.gazeta.pl emphasizes that it would be a shot in the foot. Such a decision means deep cuts and mass layoffs. “The new authorities will certainly have to do something to prove that the money is well spent,” the expert notes.
“The atmosphere is like on the Titanic”
We observed the first effects of the election results on TVP during the election evening. Danuta Holecka changed her attitude towards the position, and news programs gave the rivals of Law and Justice a voice for the first time since the beginning of the campaign.
A TVP Info reporter, who wished to remain anonymous, admits in an interview with Wirtualne Media that there is chaos at TVP. “People are convinced that changes in TVP, if they happen, will take place in January at the earliest. Generally, everyone is afraid of losing their jobs, but they are probably hoping for a miracle. They are convinced that if the Civic Coalition joins TVP, those who put their mouths on it will be fired. on the air, and others will stay,” he says. This leaves journalists on edge. “They don’t know what to say on air. That’s why they stopped attacking PSL, Konfederacja and Hołownia, because they count on a coalition with PiS. They attack Tusk a little, but moderately. There was no meeting. Everyone tries to work intuitively and walks on thin ice” – he adds.
“We sit locked up and devastated in our rooms. We don’t show up and we hope for a miracle and that they will leave us alone. On the other hand, we are aware that the situation has already been swept away and the atmosphere is like on the Titanic,” emphasizes another TVP Info journalist.
TVP stars have little chance of retaining their positions, they will most likely soon have to look for a place in non-public media supporting right-wing views, such as Gazeta Polska or Telewizja Republika. It is difficult to predict what will happen to people whose faces are not widely known. However, TVP employees themselves emphasize that with public television on their CV it is difficult for them to find a new job, and the record is not treated as valuable experience. Technical workers, such as assemblers and operators, are in a much better situation. “After all, during the PO, people from Trwam came to TVP. The operator takes photos and does not get involved in the substantive issues and politics. TVP employs a lot of wonderful and professional people,” says one of them.
