New retirement age in Poland? The topic evokes many emotions

Currently, the retirement age is 60 years for women and 65 years for men. However, not everyone retires at this age. Some Poles decide to continue working so that their benefits will be higher in the future. Others, on the other hand, look forward to their birthdays and reaching the appropriate age to finally take a well-deserved rest. It is therefore not surprising that the topic of changing the retirement age raises many emotions. There are many ideas and speculations. Some time ago, on behalf of Business Insider Polska, it conducted a survey, which shows that more than half of Poles agree to raise the retirement age by one year in exchange for 400 plus, i.e. an increase in the amount of the pension by PLN 400 per month. 59 percent of respondents support the solution, 35 percent strongly support it, 23 percent rather support it. The rest of the respondents are not convinced by this idea.

Raising the retirement age. What do politicians say about this?

In March 2023, Minister of Family Marlena MalÄ…g stated that no one intends to increase the retirement age. – We did not restore the retirement age (60 for women, 65 for men) in order to now work on extending it – . Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki also spoke in one of PiS’s election spots. He recalled the increase in the retirement age during Donald Tusk’s government. – 67 is a number of shame for Donald Tusk, he had no scruples in raising the retirement age for Poles to 67 (…) Finally, tell the truth to Poles that you are putting your foot down to restore a higher retirement age. We give Poles a free choice – However, in 2010, in the text “Tusk’s two rules are to save finances”, the “Rzeczpospolita” daily quoted Mateusz Morawiecki’s statement. The politician was then the president of Bank Zachodni WBK and had a completely different opinion. – In the economy, miracle recipes are an illusion. (…) I hope that the government will act determinedly to raise and equalize the retirement age, introduce the income criterion in KRUS and eliminate the privileges of uniformed services – .
