Grzegorz Kasdepke will sue the magazine for cutting a story about refugees from his story. “A thoughtful act of censorship”

“On December 7, I published the information about the censorship of my story in the 4th issue of ‘Małe Charaktery’ (which describes itself as a psychological magazine for children). Before that, I was not informed that the text raised any controversy among the editors of the magazine, and I was not contacted with a request to accept the abbreviations – although, as a consequence, the pronunciation of the piece was radically changed. I would like to emphasize clearly that it was not about cosmetic, but substantive changes “- begins his post on Facebook Grzegorz Kasdepke.

Kasdepke: Someone saw a political issue in it

The author of “Detective Music Box” reports that he found out about the censorship of the piece during a telephone conversation with the magazine’s editor, when the issue was already in print. The writer emphasizes that he received information that the decision was made by the editor’s superior, and adds:

I gave the editorial office time to publicly explain the situation on the magazine’s websites. The editors did not comply with my request and did not inform the readers that they were dealing with an incomplete work, without an ending. What’s more, they tried to convince me by e-mail that in view of the turbulent situation on the border, the publication of the text in its entirety raised too many doubts in the publishing house – and that someone saw a political issue in it. These words prove that we are dealing with a deliberate and deliberate act of censorship.

The publisher of “Mały Character”, that is Forum Media Polska, spoke about the matter publicly on December 7, giving a different reason. “In their statement, the editors of ‘Mały Characterów’ assured that the censorship of the text was only ‘the result of an error in the course of publishing.’ It was also declared that the story: ‘(…) tomorrow will be available on the website of’ Mały Characterów ‘in its entirety’. No it is true, we still do not have a signed contract, and due to the attitude of the publishing house, I decided to end my cooperation with the magazine “- writes the author of the story. He adds that the attempt to settle the matter amicably will not be successful, so he intends to resort to the court.

Let us add that in the statement of the letter of December 7 (published before the writer’s decision to go to court) there was information about the managing editor, against whom the consequences were to be drawn in connection with the “editorial error”.

At the moment, the short story “Na Zaw” is available on the magazine’s website with an excerpt about bringing gifts to the eastern border, where “people who need to take Christmas are waiting!”.
