The journalist and writer Sonsoles Ónega. she has become the winner of the 2023 Planeta Prize with his novel ‘The Maid’s Daughter’a work presented as ‘Autumn without you’, and signed under the pseudonym Gabriela Monte.
The novel tells the story of a Galician business family, the Valdés, and covers the first two thirds of the 20th century and places such as exotic Cuba and mysterious Galicia, showing how the feisty women of the family created a canning empire in his homeland, but a terrible secret marked their lives forever.
“There is a literary substrate that accompanies me in all my novels, which is destiny. It starts with a cruel revenge that marks the characters,” Sonsoles Ónega explained during his speech. A story that also talks about “love, the search for truth, heartbreak, and the lack of affection” and where “those brave women who fought at sea“.
The journalist has acknowledged that this has been the most demanding challenge” that she has faced. A very exciting moment in which she has not been able to avoid remember his father.
