Mother and daughter. A talented painter and a talented writer. Aniela Pająkówna and her daughter, Stanis³awa, did not have an easy life, but their stories both show that women played a big role in Polish culture. The film was made by Andrzej Wajda based on the drama by Stanis³awa Przybyszewska.

Aniela Pająkówna was a painter. She fell in love with the writer Stanisław Przybyszewski, and when the artist found out about her pregnancy, he abandoned his lover and left. Aniela was born in 1901 and abandoned her own career to raise her child.

Aniela Pająkówna was a talented painter, and in 1891 she established her own studio. She met Stanisław Przybyszewski in Lviv. The writer willingly visited Aniela in the studio and confided in her about her problems. The woman quickly fell in love with him, but Stanisław already had a wife, and when he found out about the pregnancy, he disappeared. The spider decided to give birth, although at that time raising a child alone was associated with social and professional exclusion. So she abandoned her painting career and went abroad. She died in Paris in 1912.

Stanisława Przybyszewska grew up in Vienna, Zurich and Munich, and in 1916 she returned to Poland. From 1925, she supported herself mainly by literary activity and private foreign language lessons. She gained her greatest fame thanks to “The Danton Affair”, a five-act drama published in 1929. The work chronicles the events of the arrests and executions of the Hebertists and the trial of one of the leaders of the French Revolution, Danton. However, Przybyszewska’s achievements were appreciated only after her death. “The Danton Case” by Andrzej Wajda in 1982. The play based on the writer’s drama was also staged at the theater. In 2015, a collection of five previously unpublished short stories called “The Cyrograph on Your Own Skin and Other Stories” was published. Stanisława Przybyszewska worked on subsequent publications until her death. She died in 1935. She suffered from rheumatism for a long time and took prescription painkillers. The cause of death was poverty and exhaustion.
