Lenny Kravitz is a stage animal, a rocker of flesh and blood with a unique talent for writing feisty and catchy songs. Not all of his albums are equally good, but overall he maintains a decent level. The single “TK421” announces that the new, twelfth album will be rather successful. The song is catchy as hell, but even though I’m not a prude, the music video somehow made me laugh more than it excited me. I would like to emphasize that I am definitely a fan of Lenny, but I guess, unlike him, I have gotten old, because somehow I have the impression that he overdid it by deciding on a convention a la “50 Shades of Gray” and “365 Days”.
Lenny Kravitz shot a music video in the style of “365 days”
Time has undoubtedly stood still for Kravitz, which can be seen with the naked (hehe) eye in the music video. The rockman is in excellent physical shape, and musically he is also crazy, as if 34 years had not passed since the release of his first album. And now I don’t know whether the boy is unaware of the hottest (hehe) trends in the film market, or whether he does and is deliberately taking advantage of it. His new music video looks like a solo etude in honor of the film adaptation of Blanka LipiĆska’s erotic prose.
We start with Lenny turning over in the bed and stretching sleepily to expose his muscular and sculpted torso. When the musician gets out of bed, it turns out that he doesn’t believe in such things as pajamas, which gives the audience a perfect view of the gluteus muscle group as Lenny pulls the curtains from the huge window. The next stage is morning ablutions in the bathroom.
Kravitz takes a shower in such a way that Michele Morrone might be jealous, because there is more erotic tension here than in a similar sequence in the movie “365 Days”. Next, Lenny, wrapped in a towel, brushes his teeth. But he doesn’t do it like an ordinary person. No no. He dances, tap dances, flexes his muscles, sings laughing into a toothbrush (here we have a detailed look at the condition of his teeth, the dentist did an excellent job) and playfully moves the said towel from his hips to boast again about how he sawed off his gluteus maximus at the gym.
As we know, after brushing your teeth, nothing tastes as good as a morning cigarette, which Kravitz smokes with gold sunglasses on his nose. And at the same time, you lecture on a piano or a large cabinet. Well, from the music video we learn that Lenny also has problems with what to wear, because he changes his shirts several times.
Particularly arresting is the sequence in which he digs into his leather pants and the camera follows it from below. Clearly, someone wanted to appreciate the work of the costume design department, because Kravitz dangles towards the camera positioned in this way with chains suspended from the front on his trouser belt. Later, the rocker lies down in the bathtub and demonstrates that he is almost split in his leather pants and grabs himself in a strategic place as a defensive gesture. We also see him sitting on a chair facing the backrest, which he seems to be attacking with his hips. Next is a session of gymnastic contortions with a guitar – it turns out that the secret to such perfect sculpting of the thigh muscles and surrounding areas is, among others, “glute bridge” figure in Polish called lifting the hips in a lying position. This morning etude ends with Kravitz dancing out of the house. I fully agree with the title of CNN’s article about the video: “Lenny Kravitz boasts about his masculinity in new, almost uncomfortably sexy music video.”
The text of the song is, of course, addressed to a woman whom the lyrical subject encourages to abandon her fears and have wild fun together. I admit that I’m not sure what the title “TK421” is exactly. I managed to determine that this is the name of a popular model of thermal imaging monocular. This one is of course the most phallic in shape. The second possibility is a reference to the world of “Star Wars”. TK421 was the number assigned to one of the Imperial stormtroopers stationed on the Death Star. Also very masculine.
Interestingly, the whole thing was created under the watchful eye of a woman. The video was directed by Ukrainian director Tanu Muino – she is known for her work on music videos for artists such as “As It Was” by Harry Styles, Monatik, Time and Glass, NK, IOWA, “Up” by Cardi B and “Wild Side” by Normani.
Lenny Kravitz has sold over 40 million albums so far, won four Grammy Awards, has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and recently received the “Fashion Icon Award”. The album “Blue Electric Light” is scheduled for release on March 15, 2024. Kravitz is the author of the lyrics and music, he recorded most of the instruments that we hear on the album, and he also produced the whole thing himself. He was supported in the recording studio by guitarist Craig Ross.
