Poles loved this cult series. During its broadcast, the streets were deserted

On October 10, 1968, Polish Television broadcast the first episode of the series, which over time won the hearts of countless viewers. Years later, it even became a cult work. Many people remember “the stakes are higher than life” with laughter and nostalgia. The production has its permanent fan base, which does not mean that it does not attract new audiences.

Certain productions are never forgotten by the audience – years later they come back to them with a nostalgic smile and a wealth of memories. “Stakes Larger than Life” could certainly be included among such works. For many, the series that premiered 55 years ago is now a time machine.

When the series was broadcast, the streets were empty

When Polish Television broadcast the first episode of “The Stakes Greater Than Life” in 1968, almost no one expected how popular the spy series directed by Janusz Morgenstern and Andrzej Konic would become. The adventures of the brave Lieutenant Kloss were followed with bated breath by crowds of viewers on TV – both in Poland and abroad. The production delighted not only Albanians, but also Russians, Greeks, Scandinavians and even the Chinese.

– Viewers were hungry for TV back then, they watched everything and waited for the next episodes of our series. When “Stakes Greater than Life” was playing, the streets were emptyand whole families gathered in front of the TV sets – recalled StanisÅ‚aw Mikulski, who played the role of Lieutenant Hans Kloss, via Interia.

“There were moments in my life that I wanted to forget”

The cult nature of the series is proven not only by its unflagging popularity despite the passage of time, but also by the fact that many quotes have entered everyday language. “These numbers are not with me, Brunner” or “In Paris, the best chestnuts are on Pigalle Square” – it happens that even people who have never seen “Stakes Larger than Life” are familiar with these texts. It would seem that the fame gained by the main characters of the production became their key to happiness – but appearances are deceiving.

– There were moments in my life when… I wanted to forget about Hans Kloss at all costs. However, it ended like fighting windmills always ends – the world wouldn’t let me. Even in distant Mongolia I was recognized on the street, let alone while walking around Warsaw – wrote StanisÅ‚aw Mikulski in his autobiography.
