When the mandatory confinement due to the COVID-19 pandemic began in mid-March 2020, Baquerizo Belly Margarita She had only been a widow for a few months. Her husband, Armando Baquerizo Carbo, had just passed away in November 2019.
For dealing with loneliness and sadness (“I don’t like sadness,” says the interviewee), Doña Margarita, who had already made herself known in other artistic adventures always self-taught (theatre, puppets, children’s literature) he thought a perfect relief in painting, especially in watercolor.
The production during this first months of mourning and uncertainty for global healthand the creations that followed have put together their first exhibition that will be on display all month in the exhibition hall of the Theater Arts Center. The exhibition, titled My life and my workwill be inaugurated herewith Wednesday, October 11 at 5 p.m.

“I started with YouTubeThere I saw that I could take lessons and take extra lessons. And I started painting watercolors, but after a while, a year, a friend told me why I didn’t call a teacher and so I called the architect. Víctor Hugo Peña, a painter. He paints very beautifully and he agreed to teach me and a small group. I have been painting for two years now,” Barriga explains.
Their pieces inspired by the tenderness towards his family, the innocence of children, Guayaquil and his memories won the interest of the ladies of the Women’s Culture Association Foundationwho invited her to exhibit, the brand new painter explains. About 80 watercolors make up the first exhibition, which will be on view through October 25 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

“I even painted my grandchildren, I like to paint everything that fascinates me. It can be a house, flowers, boats in the sea… I even like to dance, I painted a Spanish dancer,” says Barriga. “I like it so much that I forget the world. I start painting and I feel relaxed, I feel happy. I paint very quickly, I can paint a picture or a landscape in two hours, but there are also other paintings that take me longer, days. My enthusiasm lies in painting.”

This new artistic facet of Margarita Barriga is her most recent self-financed venture. The name of the new painter is also known in the universe of Ecuadorian books. Barriga is the author of the saga of Mine, a collection of children’s stories featuring the main character Mía in various Ecuadorian settings and situations that provide children with learning opportunities. He also ventured into it development of dolls for preschool education.
