The Peruvian Government, through the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (Midagri), appointed this morning Juan Carlos Castro Vargas as the new head of the National Water Authority (ANA).
The supreme resolution 019-2023-MIDAGRI also accepts the resignation formulated by the agronomist José Luis Aguilar Huertas, who remained as head of the ANA since April 2023.
Juan Carlos Castro Vargas is a biologist from the National University of Trujillo and has a master’s degree in Environmental Management from the Santiago Antúnez University of Mayolo.
He has a specialty in Watershed Management at the Tropical Agricultural Research and Teaching Center of Costa Rica, as well as a specialty in Water Governance in Latin America from the National Water Agency of Brazil.
ANA is the governing body and the highest technical-regulatory authority of the National Water Resources Management System of Peru. Its functions include authorizing the volumes of water used or distributed by water service providers (EPS and Irrigation Boards), and evaluating environmental instruments.
