Just a week ago we reported that “” attracted almost half a million viewers. These data are no longer valid after last weekend. Although the political free promotion of the production ended, almost 85,000 people still went to see the film awarded at the Venice International Film Festival. Thus, the production exceeded the magical ceiling of not only half a million, but even 600,000 viewers. And that’s not the end.
Despite the government’s pressure, “The Green Border” is breaking popularity records
The government’s attacks on Agnieszka Holland’s production provided her with completely free promotion in the last weeks before the elections. Negative opinions of ministers, politicians and authorities not only discouraged, but even encouraged people to go to cinemas. They wanted to see with their own eyes whether the “anti-Polish” “Green Border” really is as anti-Polish as they paint it.
Not even a month has passed since the film’s premiere (September 22). However, the difficult subject matter did not discourage viewers even after three weeks. Although fewer and fewer people watch “The Green Border” each weekend, last Saturday and Sunday it lost only to… “Paw Patrol”. Therefore, this production is currently at the top of the Polish box-office in 2023 – only a hair’s breadth ahead of it by “A Dog Who Ride a Railroad”. The film also consistently holds the podium in the “most viewers in the opening weekend” category.
However, “The Green Border” owes its popularity not only (paradoxically) to the government campaign. The good attendance result of the production was also due to the Cinema Festival held at the end of September, during which cinema tickets were much cheaper than usual. This tempted a record number of viewers to spend several hours in the cinema – according to the International Union of Cinemas, over 40 percent. tickets during the holiday were sold in Poland for Polish productions.
Will “The Green Border” end the year with a million viewers? Unfortunately, the chances for this are minimal – the decline in interest in the production is clearly visible and it can be assumed that anyone who was going to see it in the cinema has already done so. However, we are waiting for information about exceeding the ceiling of 700,000 viewers, which in Polish conditions would be an unprecedented event in 2023 – none of the Polish films reached such an audience this year.
