“Chłopi” is a film by Dorota Kobiela-Welchman and Hugh Welchman, based on the novel by Władysław Reymont. The production has a chance to represent Poland at the next Oscar gala. The titles of the Oscar-nominated films will be announced on January 23 next year, and two days earlier we will find out which ones are on the so-called shortlists in individual categories. “Chłopów” will be shown in Polish cinemas under the media patronage of Gazeta.pl from October 13.
Robert Gulaczyk lost part of his finger on the set of “Peasants”
Robert Gulaczyk played the role of Antek Boryna in the film. The actor also worked on “Loving Vincent”, where he voiced the title painter. The above-mentioned production was made using painting animation technology, similarly to “Chłopi”. In an interview with Gazeta.pl, Gulaczyk admitted that the most difficult scene for him to shoot was the rape of Jagna, but as it turns out, there were many more challenges.
The film’s Antek Boryna also had to adapt physically to his role. The creators noted that in order to look credible in front of the cameras, he will have a special task – to “pack”. There were many scenes of fights and brawls on the set, but they were not the ones that turned out to be the most dangerous for Gulaczyk’s health.
“I asked for my cabbage chopper to be sharpened”
In an interview for PAP quoted by Interia, the actor told how he lost a piece of his finger in a scene with shredding cabbage. “I asked for the cabbage chopper to be sharpened because it was dull and I couldn’t cut it well. Of course, the technical team sharpened it slightly. We started chopping the cabbage again, the music started and everything else, and suddenly it happened – the stalk was cut off ” – reports Boryna. “It was a bit scary at first, but we finished shooting,” he adds.
Fortunately, the wound was not serious and the scenes were filmed to the end with a satisfactory effect. In the same conversation, the actor emphasized that his work on films made using painting animation technology is no different from his work on traditional film forms. “The only difference is that when we have a painting reference to which we refer, it must be played very precisely, down to millimeters,” Gulaczyk emphasizes.
