The editorial office of the monthly “Znak” informed about the death of Ireneusz Kania. In a post on social media, the magazine informs that the translator was ill and passed away at night. “He was a friend and a regular reader of the Monthly. Recently we were in constant contact, preparing an interview about Buddhism, which was very close to him. Despite the rapid progression of the disease, he was calm,” we read.
Ireneusz Kania is dead. The outstanding translator was 83 years old
Bartosz Szydłowski, theater director and founder of the Łaźnia Nowa Theater, also published a farewell entry. “Ireneusz Kania has died. His translations accompanied me in so many moments of my life. He reached for important, original, and challenging texts. A great loss!” – remembers the deceased.

Mr. Ireneusz was a real hard worker, an intellectual, and at the same time an extremely modest person with a great sense of humor. Working with him was an honor and pleasure for us. He will forever remain our role model,” writes the National Institute about Ireneusz Kania Publishing.
He was fueled by curiosity about the world
“The source of my translation activities has always been the same drive: curiosity about the world, striving to understand things that I do not understand, or at least to get closer to what I have always been passionate about. And I have been passionate about many things – old distant cultures, great exotic traditions, religions and, of course, languages” – quotes Ireneusz Kania in a conversation with Zofia Zaleska, fanpage Dzień Szota.
Ireneusz Kania was born in 1940 in Wieluń. He graduated in Romanian studies from the Jagiellonian University in Kraków. In the 1960s, he worked as a proofreader and editor in the local branch of PWN. However, from the beginning he was interested in Asian culture, in particular Buddhism. In 1972, he made his debut with a work devoted to Lama dance masks. Then he also began to translate. Kania is the author of over 100 translations of authors such as Emil Cioran, Umberto Eco and Petrarca.
