If we want to obtain the benefit, we must show the contributory and non-contributory periods, which will help calculate the appropriate amount of the benefit. The final amount is influenced by contribution periods, i.e. the moments in which we paid social security contributions. This includes years spent at work, military service, as well as maternity and parental leave or during which we ran our own business. However, it is worth remembering that non-contributory periods are also important and are included in the length of service, but they cannot exceed 1/3 of the proven contribution periods. In the case of women it should be 20 years and in the case of men 25 years to obtain at least the lowest pension.

Non-contributory periods include primarily the time when we were on sickness or care benefits, as well as years of university education, if we have completed it and we can confirm it with appropriate documents. It is worth noting that studies always count towards work experience as 8 years, regardless of whether we completed bachelor’s or master’s studies and how long it took us. Not everyone knows this, but thanks to this we can count 8 years of work experience and, therefore, use it not only when applying for the lowest pension, but also when calculating the leave we are entitled to.
