In the global ranking of the most popular foreign-language films on Netflix, “Quack” (English title: “Forgotten Love”) took second place with 11.9 million views. It was overtaken by the title directed by Albert Pint – and with practically twice as good result. The Spanish “Nowhere” has 23.8 million views in the period September 25-October 1. For both productions, this is the first week in the Netflix Top10 ranking.
What is “Nowhere” about? This film won over “The Quack”
While “The Quack” is a warm and sentimental melodrama in which a slow pace allows us to learn about Rafał Wilczur’s story, the Spanish “Nowhere” is a thriller that constantly surprises us with new obstacles. The main character is a pregnant woman who has to cope on her own in a very extreme situation.
What is the plot of “Nowhere” about? Mia (Anna Castillo) is expecting a child. She and her husband decide to escape from the country ruled by a totalitarian regime by sea, hiding in a container. When they are forcibly separated from each other and a violent storm pushes the container into the water, the woman must fight for survival. Alone on the high seas, Mia will do everything to save her daughter’s life and reunite with her husband.
Who are the actors of the new Netflix hit? Is it worth seeing?
29-year-old Anna Castillo is the winner of the Goya Award (the most important Spanish film award). She won it in 2016 for “Olive Tree” in the best debuting actress category. Since then, she has been nominated for this award three more times. Telenovela fans may also know her, because the actress played Dorita in the soap opera “Amar es para siempre” in 2013-16. She also has a musical career – she was a member of the SP3 band, in which she sang and danced.
She could also be seen in, for example, “Wild Sunflowers”, “Untold Stories”, “Journey to Mother’s Room” and “Calling”. This year, a melodrama with her participation titled “A Perfect Story” also appeared on Netflix. It stars Margot, who runs away from her own wedding and feels completely lost. Little does she know that David (Alvaro Mel) and his charming scatterbrain will provide her with stability.
In “Nowhere”, Tamar Novas played the husband of the character played by Anna Castillo. He also won the Goya statuette for best newcomer, although a little earlier. In 2004, he received it for his role in the film “Towards the Sea”. He played, among others, in “Broken Embraces” by Pedro Almodovar and “The Ghosts of Goya” by Milos Forman.
The film receives rather moderately good reviews. Currently, out of 10 film critics on Rotten Tomatoes, six of them recommend “Nowhere” and four rather criticize the production. You can read, among other things, that “it’s a suspenseful and claustrophobic drama that uses the minimalism of the setting to induce a huge dose of anxiety”, but also that “it’s a standard survival story that shows nothing noteworthy about the heroine forced to cope itself or a society that abandons it.
