Jon Fosse delighted the Academy. “Once you start reading it, you can’t stop”

The 2023 Nobel Prize in Literature has been awarded! This year, Jon Fosse turned out to be unrivaled. How did he impress the Academy? The chairman of the Nobel Committee spoke about him in beautiful words.

. Jon Fosse has been at the top of bookmakers’ rankings for several weeks, but as usual, it was not known until the last moment whether he would actually receive the Nobel Prize, which authors around the world dream of.

Explaining the decision of the Nobel Committee, its chairman – Professor Anders Olsson – drew attention to the universality of the topics discussed by Fosse in his works. “His literary output consists of over 40 works from various fields – poetry, essays, translations, dramas, but also children’s books, short stories, prose…” – said the chairman of the Nobel Committee with satisfaction.

Nobel Prize in Literature 2023 – Jon Fosse

The Academy awarded Fosse the Nobel Prize primarily for “Septologia”, described at the press conference as the author’s magnum opus. It is a monologue without punctuation marks, contained in over 1,200 pages, touching on the subject of life and death in an extremely poetic way – Fosse also includes in his prose all his love for poetry. Fosse, however, is also an exceptionally talented playwright whose plays can be read in the same way as his prose, as the chairman of the Nobel Committee pointed out during a short press conference that followed the announcement of this year’s winner.

He is a fantastic author in so many ways. His literature is deeply moving from many angles. Once you start reading it, you can’t stop. It talks about themes of life and death, themes that connect us all, everyone in the world. It doesn’t matter to him whether it’s drama, poetry, prose, it’s a very human subject that concerns each of us.

When asked where to start reading Fosse, Professor Anders Olsson suggested the following order:

His plays are great to read. But you can start with anything – I would recommend prose from 2000 (“Morning and Evening” – unfortunately, not yet translated into Polish – editor’s note), and then “Septologia”, just finished in 2021 – he said.

The Nobel Committee’s decision states that Jon Fosse received the award for “innovative plays and prose that give voice to the unspeakable“.
