The writer and translator Xabier Mendiguren Bereziartu dies at the age of 78

The writer and translator Xabier Mendiguren Bereziartu has died today at the age of 78. Born in Ezkio in 1945, he dedicated almost his entire life to the promotion and defense of Basque from different areas. Among others, he was general secretary of Euskalgintzaren Kontseilua for 12 years and was named corresponding academic of Euskaltzaindia in 1975.

During the first years of the ikastolas, he participated in various didactic and pedagogical projects and created numerous contents for teaching. He was founder of the Iker group and co-author of the Basque textbooks Saioka.

Graduated in Philosophy and Letters, he also participated in the creation of the Martutene School of Translators and was technical director of the Classics of Thought collection. He also did translation work for EiTB.

The current general secretary of Euskalgintzaren Kontseilua, Idurre Eskisabel, has praised Mendiguren’s work in favor of Basque: “Euskaraz bizitzeko ahaleginean bizitza oso bat euskararentzat. Mila esker Xabier, Kontseiluari ez ezik euskara jendeoi eman diguzun guztiagatik”, she has written online social
