The film adaptation of “Peasants” by W³adys³aw Reymont, directed by DK and Hugh Welchman, has a chance to become a hit like “Loving Vincent”. After the pre-premiere shows, reviewers pay special attention to the music, which gives the whole thing a unique atmosphere. It was composed by rapper LUC, who makes his debut in the film

Władysław Reymont, directed by Dorota Kobiela-Welchman and Hugh Welchman, was presented to the Polish audience for the first time on September 19, 2023, during the Main Competition at the Polish Feature Film Festival in Gdynia. The film, created using the painting animation technique, has so far received a lot of positive reviews, although there are still a few weeks until its cinema debut.

He was entrusted with the compositions for the painting animation “Peasants”. This is his debut in the world of film music

Music plays a huge role in the film and is an integral part of it. It not only provides a background for the plot, but also builds the mood and complements the picture. In the animated version of “Peasants”, its composition was entrusted to the renowned rapper and music producer Łukasz Rostkowski, who operates in the industry under the pseudonym LUC. Although he has collaborated with many famous artists during his 20-year career, this is his debut in the world of film music.

In an interview, he talked about the beginnings of his work in production. He admitted that as soon as the idea of creating for animation arose, “he had no doubt that he wanted to take on this challenge.” He has been trying to start cooperation with a film studio for a long time, but to no avail because, as he argues, it is a “very hermetic environment”. Ultimately, as part of the competition, he prepared test music for the concept trailer and that’s how his adventure with the film began. “I could do some folk roller skating,” he recalled.

Working on the soundtrack was a challenge. For him, “Chłopi” is a “four-year film academy”

Although the final result delighted critics, it was a long and arduous process that began long before entering the studio. First, LUC got acquainted with the previous film adaptation of “The Peasants”, which is raw and naturalistic. – Creating film music is something else. It’s a completely different way of thinking about instruments, song structure and emotions. I learned almost everything from scratch, he said. He did not want to recreate the original, but to create his own path, which is why he became familiar with folk music on various levels. First, he created compositions for acting photos, but once the painted images were created, difficulties began to arise. – When the film was painted, it turned out that the music did not always reflect the atmosphere so well and harmonize with the image – he said. Further problems were caused by inflation, which reduced the budget, and the war in Ukraine, which caused the studio in Kiev to abandon the project. This required the removal of many spectacular scenes and, as a result, changes to the music.

Nearly a hundred outstanding artists were responsible for the final performance of his compositions, including: Tędzy Ch³opi, Sutari, Laboratorium Pieśni, Maria Pomianowska, TeTno, Karolina Skrzyńska, Tomasz Chyła and many others. For LUC himself it was a great honor and lesson. – I appeared in this film not only as a composer, but also as a co-creator – he said. – I had total space to express myself, which is what I love the most: when the music starts dancing with the image, creating music video landscapes. On the one hand, I wanted to retain the style of a folk band, and on the other hand, I wanted to give this music character and clarity – he said, adding that he was grateful for the trust placed in him. – It was fascinating because after 20 years I was discovering music again – he said.
