Recall that the census was mandatory, free of charge and was conducted between April 1 and September 30, 2021 – exactly 100 years after the first general census. In 1921, much greater religious diversity could be observed in our country. At that time, 63.9 percent of citizens called themselves Catholics. As much as 36.1 percent were other denominations, including Greek Catholic (11.1%), Judaism (10.5%), Orthodox Christianity (10.5%), Evangelical (3.7%).
In turn, the 2021 census shows that as many as 91 percent of people identified themselves as identifying with a given denomination, church or religious association. As many as 89 percent of society – i.e. approximately 27 million Poles – consider themselves Catholics. How many non-believers do we have in Poland? In the census, this group was defined as people without any religious denomination. This is only 9 percent of respondents (8.64 percent).

A total of 30 million 212 thousand people out of 38 million 118 eligible people took part in the Census conducted two years ago. Exactly 27 million 601 thousand respondents declared their religious affiliation. Non-believers – according to the census – constitute only 2 million 506 people among all respondents.
The remaining, most numerous denominations in Poland are Orthodox Christianity (151,648 declared followers), Jehovah’s Witnesses (108,754), members of the Evangelical Augsburg Church (65,407), members of the Greek Catholic Church (33,209) and members of the Pentecostal Church (30,105). However, only 2,209 respondents declare their affiliation with the Muslim Religious Association.
