– For some time now, when I have been reading scripts, the choice of role has also been greatly influenced by who the script will be written with, and when I received an offer from Janek Holoubek, with whom I had just finished working on a series for Netflix, to play in “Doppelganger”. , then I thought that absolutely yes, without even knowing what the project would be about – says Tomasz Schuchardt.
Tomasz Schuchardt: Such topics have not yet been discussed in Polish cinema
– Once I read the script, so did I [przekonałem się, że – red.] and the story itself is captivating. Firstly, the subject has not yet been touched upon in Polish cinema – the Polish intelligence services, people who stole the identities of others and later pretended to be them, this is a card that is probably not fully known to Poles. It was interesting, and here – in my case – there is also a role that is a bit of a counterpoint to the character played by Kuba Gierszał, and Kubuś and I also like each other, so this is also an additional thing, all the things came together to take part in this film – he adds. What does he say about working with Jan Holoubek and his role in “Doppelganger. Doppelganger”? Watch the video:
Janek Bitner’s driving force is well-understood patriotism, notes the actor in an interview with Gazeta.pl. – Why did we need it? Precisely because in a situation in which we will struggle with the communist system that prevailed in Poland after World War II, and this hero will encounter it quite often on his way, and this system will bother him, will bother him, then It is this subcutaneous patriotism that will give him the drive to act, not to give up but to fight, says Schutchardt.
What is “Doppelganger: Doppelganger” about?
The film takes place on both sides of the Iron Curtain simultaneously. As we read in the official plot description, Hans Steiner (Jakub Gierszał) lives in Strasbourg, taking advantage of the opportunities offered by the West. He blends into the local community while also conducting espionage activities. Jan Bitner (Tomasz Schuchardt) lives with his family in Gdańsk and works in a shipyard. There seems to be nothing in common between the two men, but the past hides a secret that will force them to face their own weaknesses and passions. Both will face questions about their identity.
Jan Holoubek’s new film (“25 Years of Innocence. The Case of Tomek Komendy”, “Wolf Water”) received six awards at the September Polish Film Festival in Gdynia: for director (Jan Holoubek), cinematography (Bartłomiej Kaczmarek), supporting actor (Tomasz Schuchardt), costumes (Weronika Orlińska), set design (Marek Warszewski) and the Radio Gdańsk Award for sound effects. It hits theaters on September 29. We would like to thank the distributor of the film Next Film for the opportunity to produce material about the film Doppelganger.
