On September 22, 2023, a film directed by Michał Gazda joined the Netflix library. This is the third film adaptation of the cult novel by Tadeusz Dołęga Mostowicz, the most popular of which is the one from 1982. The new version of the moving story of Professor Rafał Wilczur has been receiving positive reviews from both viewers and critics from the beginning. Many people pay attention to the music, which complements the image, giving the whole thing a unique atmosphere. Who is responsible for its implementation?

I don’t think anyone needs to be convinced that it has a huge impact on the reception of the film and the emotions that accompany the audience during the screening. Many outstanding artists worked on it, including: renowned composer Paweł Lucewicz, who has created soundtracks for many excellent productions. The most popular ones include: “A Century of the Guilty”, “Szadź” or “Under the Surface”. He also collaborated with many artists, including: Margaret or Natalia Sikora, co-creating their great hits.
When work on the new film adaptation of Dołęga-Mostowicz’s novel began, the idea was that the songs featured in it would refer to the region where the action takes place, i.e. Mazovia. Lucewicz began an intensive search for a group that would be able to implement this idea and, what’s more, would be able to create a unique atmosphere and folk sound. This is how he found the SVAHY band, which consists of three girls: Patrycja Cywińska-Gacka, Ewa Pater and Małgorzata Żurańska-Wilkowska.

The offer of cooperation turned out to be a great honor and a great challenge for the artists. In a post published on Facebook, they recalled what it was like to prepare the three songs that ultimately completed the new version of “Znachor”.
Paweł Lucewicz writes us a message with a proposal to cooperate on a film (he does not give the title – TOP SECRET project!) We are overcome with euphoria combined with disbelief, because we know Paweł’s music from other films. We only know that these are supposed to be songs from the Masovia region. We get down to work, selecting songs in close contact with Paweł and director Michał Gazda. We leaf through thousands of pages of Oskar Kolberg, sing in the evenings, harmonize, send suggestions and we have it
– described cooperation. The songs created for the film refer to traditional rural music and folk songs from the picturesque regions of Kujawy and the Pałuki region. It cannot be denied that the band did a lot of great work, as evidenced by the reviews full of admiration for the music.
Who is the SVAHY group? The name comes from matchmakers and swaszkas, i.e. married women who, according to tradition, took part in weddings. The band consists of three young artists who not only sing, but also play instruments: Partycja Cwińska-Gacka on the frame drum, Ewa Pater on the guitar, mandolin and Biłgoraj suka, and Małgorzata Żurańska-Wilkowska on the hurdy-gurdy. They currently have an EP called “rozdzieś”, which they promoted with the single “O, moja wianku lavenderowy”, but they do not intend to slow down and announce that this is only the beginning of their musical adventure.
