Professor Rafał Wilczur as Antoni Kosiba (played by Leszek Lichota) goes to the village of Radoliszki in Netflix’s “The Quack”. Unless in a movie from years ago. The heroes of the 1980s lived in Podlasie (part of them were Orthodox), but in the latest adaptation of the novel by Tadeusz Dołęga-Mostowicz they live in Mazovia, near Radom. In one of the scenes, Kosiba says that he is going to this city, where the scenes of the trial of the titular medicine man also take place. And where were the photos for the film taken?
Where were they filming the new “Quack”? Supposedly Radom, but Lublin
Filmmakers shot frames for Hoffman’s production, among others: in Bielsk Podlaski, the palace in Radziejowice, Skolimów, Piekary and Łódź. The creators of the 2023 film have set up a set in, for example, Lublin. They used, among others: the local open-air museum and the Old Town. In turn, the tenement house in which Professor Wilczur appears before his accident was found by the set designers in Zgierz (Łódź Voivodeship).
Interestingly, the photos, which lasted 44 days, were very extended in time, including: due to the director’s decision regarding the main character’s hairstyle. -We had a week of escape shooting before the main summer schedule. These were the winter sequences of the first act, when Antoni Kosiba is still a Wilczur. Which turned out to be a very cool and beneficial solution, because we could assemble the material and check if we were going in the right direction. Does our poetics of classic, broad and cinematic storytelling make sense? It turned out that yes. After the winter shooting, we still had half a year to prepare thoroughly for the rest of the production – . – We found consultants for literally everything: medical historians, automotive experts, zoologists, Warsaw experts, Yiddish linguists and so on. I also insisted that Lechu cannot play with a glued beard and artificially extended hair. This half a year allowed us to wait until he grew naturally and lost a few kilos – explained the director.
Music from Masovia
The music creators made sure that the atmosphere of Masovia was felt on the screen. Paweł Lucewicz invited the SVAHY band to cooperate, consisting of Patrycja Cywińska-Gacka (frame drum, vocals), Ewa Pater (Bilgoraj bitch, mandolin, guitar, vocals) and Małgorzata Żurańska-Wilkowska (hurdy-gurdy, vocals). In Gazda’s film, we hear three songs from the Masovia region.
“Quack” is now available to watch on Netflix. The film features, among others: Leszek Lichota, Maria Kowalska, Anna Szymańczyk, Ignacy Liss and Izabela Kuna. The only person from the cast of the 1980s version who now appears on screen is Artur Barciś. He played the Czyński family’s butler.
