A well-kept grave of loved ones is something that many people care about. For some, it is even an obligation to honor the lives of the dead with dignity. We pay special attention to this when November 1 approaches, which is the time when a large part of the family will gather at the cemetery. What will Basia from Silesia say when she sees weeds around the grave? And Uncle Janek from Bydgoszcz will certainly not fail to comment on the old candles.
The cemetery is also segregated
That is why, a few weeks before this important holiday, we go to cemeteries to clean the monuments. Usually, there is not much work to do, all you need to do is sweep up the leaves and wipe the slab, or pull out weeds. In addition, you cannot forget about throwing away faded artificial flowers and old candles. Everything usually goes into one container. Sometimes, if there are several containers for sorting at the cemetery, we are tempted to throw artificial bouquets separately (to mixed ones, because they are made of different materials) and glass candles (to glass, of course). And rightly so. However, there is also a problem here.
Various types of candles are placed on graves. Classic ones are glass or plastic. However, more and more often we decide to buy electric ones. This is a convenient solution because they “burn” much longer than traditional ones with a wick. In addition, you don’t have to deal with matches that don’t cooperate or look for lighters in your pockets. And when they have fulfilled their purpose and it is time to throw them away, they fall into a container or – at best – into a glass or plastic container.
The fine can be shockingly high
It turns out this is a big mistake. Electric candles, as the name suggests, should be placed in an electronic waste container. Currently, we can find them in many cemeteries, but this is not a rule. What to do when we don’t have such access? In such a case, we should take them with us, locate an appropriate garbage bin and then throw them away. This type of waste can also be sent to PSZOK.
Ignoring the obligation to segregate electronic waste is not only related to committing a sin towards our planet. We may be fined for throwing them into inappropriate containers, including mixed waste. Its amount may shock some people, because we can expect a fine of up to PLN 5,000. So if not for the environment, let’s do it for our wallet.
