The San Sebastián Film Festival and the producers’ associations have recognized the actor Paco Sagarzazu with the Zinemira Prize of 2023after a long career in front of the cameras and at the service of interpretation, humor and culture.

His partner Ane Gabarain has been in charge of presenting him with the award, at a gala in which the presenters, Aitziber Garmendia and Jon Plazaola, have once again “played”, once again, with the extensive Basque film production.

Sagarzazu has dedicated the award to his parents, of whom he has declared himself a “putative father” because he is older than them, and has thanked them for having given him enough inspiration to be an actor, comedian and comedian, “which is what I have been for years with lights and shadows, like every mortal. The actor, with a career spanning 40 years, has declared hedonistand will continue to be so.

Sagarzazu’s first appearance was in 1979, when his play Balantzatxoa It also became the first children’s feature film shot in Basque, directed by Juanmi Gutiérrez. The team was especially involved in ensuring that it was in Basque, as Sagarzazu explained.

After being a writer and radio host, he accompanied Klara Badiola to the casting of The escape from Segovia (Imanol Uribe, 1981) and ended up acting in it. Since then, he has been a luxury supporting actor, with participation in works such as Tasio (Montxo Armendariz, 1984), Another twist (Eloy de la Iglesia, 1985), when you come back to my side (Gracia Querejeta, 1999) and Wow Etxebeste! (Asier Altuna and Telmo Esnal, 2005). However, Sagarzazu does not like to distinguish between classes of actors.

Four productive decades of performances in short films, television series and great presence in the theater, the San Sebastian native does not intend to return to the cinema, but he also ensures that one should never say “I will not drink this water.”

New award for new authors

Urrusolo has been considered part of a wide ecosystem, that of the Basque industry: film library, support from the administration, investment from EITB, associations of producers, scriptwriters and directors, association of women filmmakers, schools, laboratories… Without all this there would only be “outbreaks” in Basque cinema .
