Agnieszka Holland’s latest film has been the number one topic in the Polish media for weeks. Although it was released in cinemas only on September 22, 2023, some groups had already called for a boycott of the screenings. One of the people who openly criticized the director’s actions was Zbigniew Ziobro.
Zbigniew Ziobro criticized Agnieszka Holland. He compared her to the propagandists of the Third Reich
Just before the premiere of “The Green Border”, she gave several interviews in which she talked about the behind-the-scenes of the making of the film. However, Zbigniew Ziobro did not like her statement for Onet, who decided to comment on the matter by publishing an entry on the X platform (formerly Twitter), comparing the director to German propagandists.
In the Third Reich, the Germans produced propaganda films showing Poles as bandits and murderers. Today they have Agnieszka Holland for that
The post of the Minister of Justice received wide coverage in the media. Agnieszka Holland quickly commented on the matter. In a published statement, she announced that she intended to fight for her good name in court. However, she had previously offered Ziobro a settlement.
Zbigniew Ziobro’s post clearly violates my personal rights and constitutes defamation. I cannot remain indifferent to such an open and brutal attack by a person who holds the very important constitutional position of Minister of Justice and Prosecutor General in Poland. (…) Putting me in line with the propagandists of the Third Reich is so despicable that it leaves no room for any polemics
– emphatically. Zbigniew Ziobro had 7 days to publicly apologize to the director and rectify the situation, as well as to pay PLN 50,000. PLN for the Association of Children of the Holocaust, but he decided not to make this gesture. Therefore, Holland, through lawyers, filed a lawsuit with the court.
The court banned Zbigniew Ziobro from speaking about Agnieszka Holland. This is just the beginning of the matter
On October 26, 2023, the attorneys-in-fact, attorneys Sylwia Gregorczyk-Abram and Michał Wawrykiewicz, informed about the decision issued by the District Court in Warsaw in connection with the lawsuit against Zbigniew Ziobro. – The District Court in Warsaw decided to secure the claim for the protection of personal rights until the final conclusion of the proceedings in this matter by prohibiting the obligated participant, i.e. Zbigniew Ziobro, from publishing on all his social media accounts (…) posts, statements or other information about entitled person, i.e. Agnieszka Holland or her film work – said the director’s representative. However, the ruling is not the end of the case, but only its beginning. We will probably find out how the proceedings are going in the coming weeks.
