A six-person selection committee decided which film would ultimately represent the country at the 2024 Oscars. It was headed by a producer, among others: Ewa Puszczyńska, awarded with the statuette of “Ida” by Paweł Pawlikowski many years ago. She was also joined by: the director of the Polish Film Institute, Radosław Śmigulski, producer Aneta Hickinbotham, screenwriter and producer Ewa Piaskowska, set designer Allan Starski, and director and screenwriter Maciej Ślesicki.

The final verdict fell on the animated animation “Peasants”, which will compete for the nomination of the American Film Academy in the category of best international feature film. — I would like to appeal to all of us, regardless of our political views, to support “The Peasants” – the chairwoman of the committee, announcing the winner. “It’s an impressive animated film,” she emphasized, admitting that the decision was not obvious. The final result was a majority decision, as four of the six jury members voted for “Peasants”. – We do not agree that politicians should limit our creative freedom – Puszczyńska emphasized clearly, defending the film, which for weeks has been facing criticism from various circles for the film “The Green Border”.

It seems that the Minister of Culture and National Heritage, prof., is particularly satisfied with the verdict. Piotr Gliński, who approved the composition of the Oscar Commission. Shortly after the conference at which the result was announced, he published a short entry on the X platform (formerly Twitter), congratulating this year’s candidates. He also did not fail to emphasize that the creator of “Peasants”, Dorota Kobiela-Welchman, is the winner of the annual Award of the Minister of Culture.

Many people have no doubt that the fate was decided even before the deliberations. Shortly before the results were announced, Piotr Gliński publicly spoke about the film and its creators on Radio Łódź. He argued that Agnieszka Holland’s latest painting is only a “tool for political struggle” and what is more, it is of poor quality. – It is additionally terrifying that an outstanding artist made a poor film just to contribute to some political outcome – he said, emphasizing that the director awarded at the Venice Film Festival “has no political understanding”, and therefore contributed to her actions to weaken the state, which in turn will have the opposite effect than intended. – She showed off her lack of complete understanding of political matters because she served the other side – said the Minister of Culture firmly.
