It was supposed to present the Polish candidate for the Oscar. She didn’t start with “The Peasants”. “Hateful, indiscriminate harassment”

Ewa Puszczyñska, chairwoman of the Oscar Committee appointed by the Director of the Polish Film Institute, presented the Polish candidate for the Oscar during a press conference on Monday. However, before she announced that “Chłopi” would fight for the statuette, she made a statement in defense of “The Green Border”.

Ewa Puszczyńska was to announce it at a press conference at the Polish Film Institute at 3 p.m. on Monday, September 25. In fact, only a few productions were considered in the “best international feature film” category, and the most talked about in recent weeks were “io”.

Considering the government’s campaign, it could be expected that “The Green Border” would not be given the green light to compete for the Oscars next year – the Oscar Commission may be appointed by the Director of the Polish Film Institute, but it is Minister Piotr Gliński who approves its composition. The Commission rejects arguments about possible politicization, as evidenced by its chairman, Ewa Puszczyńska. She started the announcement of the Polish candidate for the Oscars with a strong statement in which she criticized the government.

The chairwoman of the Polish Film Institute’s Oscar Committee is harsh on the government

Ewa Puszczyńska did not bite her tongue when making a statement on behalf of all members of the Oscar Committee. After long deliberations, a group of cinematography experts finally chose “Peasants” by DK Welchman and Hugh Welchman as the Polish candidate for the Oscar. However, before talking about “Peasants”, Puszczyńska made a fiery statement:

Before I present the results of the committee’s deliberations, I would like to express, on behalf of all its members, our very deep indignation and our deep opposition to this hateful, indiscriminately disgusting campaign, this wave of hate that affected the creators of the film “The Green Border”, and Agnieszka Holland in particular, from the government. and the president. Until recently, it was unimaginable that a minister, prime minister and president of a large country in the middle of Europe, instead of dealing with issues important for the country and people, would review films, using unrefined, deeply offensive terms and using it in the election campaign. On behalf of all creators, we do not agree to politicians limiting or exploiting our creative freedom, she said, clearly outraged.

“The Green Border” was also taken into account during the deliberations, and many expected that this picture would be shown in the USA. However, this did not happen. Ewa Puszczyńska briefly explained the reasons for this decision:

We made a very thorough decision, weighing all the pros and cons. Then it was decided by vote. The commission is still independent, believe me, everyone voted according to their conscience and drawing conclusions from what we discussed, she said.

The Polish Film Institute’s Oscar Committee submits “Chłop” for an Oscar

Summarizing the reasons why “Peasants” was chosen in the Oscar race, Ewa Puszczyńska described what the Polish Film Institute’s Oscar Committee thinks about the production:

The authors of “Chłopy” presented another impressive animated film. This is not only my opinion, but also that of the commission and the international press. They go much further here, reaching a new level of animation dynamism. The film also touches on important and still current social problems – the oppression of women, belonging to a man, oppression, mobbing. This story will be understood all over the world – across borders and across political divisions, she said.

She also appealed to support “The Peasants” and the creators of the picture: DK Welchman and Hugh Welchman, because their nomination will be a great reward for Polish cinematography.
