Agnieszka Holland’s “Green Border” debuted during the Venice festival. In Poland, one had to wait for screenings of a production that was controversial among right-wing supporters. When will the film be released in cinemas?

“The Green Border” is the latest film about the humanitarian crisis on the Polish-Belarusian border. In the plot, the fate of refugees is intertwined with the perspective of Polish activists and border guards. Maciej Pisuk and Gabriela Łazarkiewicz are responsible for the script for the film. In the film you can see, among others, Maja Ostaszewska, Tomasz Włosok, Maciej Stuhr, Agata Kulesza and Piotr Stramowski.

Green border. What is Agnieszka Holland’s film about?

The story in the film is fictional, but the script was based on real events that take place near the Polish border. The creators drew knowledge from interviews with refugees, residents of Podlasie, activists, experts and border guards. The effect we see on the screen is also hours of analysis of many documents regarding the situation of migrants.

The world premiere of the production took place during the 80th Venice International Film Festival. Agnieszka Holland was awarded the Special Jury Prize. The film is highly controversial in Poland. Representatives and right-wing sympathizers launched an attack on the production before anyone other than Venice festival participants had a chance to see it. There were accusations of anti-Polishness, spitting on the uniform, and even comparisons to Nazi propaganda.

Green border. When in cinemas?

On September 21, pre-premiere screenings of the film took place. There were protests against the Holland production in front of Polish cinemas. The All-Polish Youth organized a demonstration in front of the Pod Baranami Cinema in Krakow. Opponents of the “Green Border” also appeared in front of the Warsaw Kinoteka. The official premiere of the film is scheduled for September 22, 2023. The production will then go to multiplexes and arthouse cinemas throughout Poland.
