Protests against the screenings of Agnieszka Holland’s “The Green Border” are still ongoing, and some have already managed to achieve their goal. According to the portal opolska360.pl, one of the schools in Kędzierzyn-Ko¼le organized students to go to the screening, but after the opposition of several parents associated with PiS, the management withdrew from this idea.

Agnieszka Holland’s latest production, which raises the issue of the crisis on the Polish-Belarusian border, arouses admiration or controversy, depending on the circles. it was presented to a wider audience for the first time during the 80th Venice International Film Festival, winning as many as four awards, including a special jury award. On September 22, 2023, the film will be released in cinemas across Poland, but not everyone will be able to see its plot.

Although it delighted critics and has so far received almost exclusively positive reviews, as soon as the official cinema premiere date was announced, some circles, and even right-wing politicians, began to call for a boycott of the screenings. The Nicolaus Copernicus Secondary School No. 2 in Kędzierzyn-Koźle also joined the opposition. According to the portal, the management of the facility canceled a planned trip to the cinema to see the film Holland. First, it was explained to the students that the decision was the responsibility of the starosty, and later a correction was made, in which it was informed that the change of plans was due to the objection of the Parents’ Council.

However, it quickly turned out that this was not true. – I am a member of the Parents’ Council and I don’t know that it debates whether high school students should go to see this film or not. Apparently this was decided by a few people from the management board, without consulting others, but what right do they have to usurp the right to decide for everyone? They don’t want to let their kids see this movie, that’s fine, I respect their decision. They just can’t impose their will on others, says one of the fathers, Mr. Krzysztof.

It quickly turned out that the perpetrators of the commotion were three parents who were associated with local representatives of Law and Justice. Even the staroste, Paweł Masełka, who is running for the Sejm from the KO list, was allegedly involved in the case, but he categorically denied it in an interview with the portal. “There is no need for politics in schools,” he said. However, parents are shocked by the management’s decision. – The authority of the principal and the teaching staff has fallen. A sad picture of our society – said Mr. Krzysztof, admitting that he personally contacted the director, accusing her of “unnecessary censorship of culture”. He quickly received an answer. – She replied that she viewed the film as controversial and did not want the school to be politicized in the pre-election period – he reported.

After the media scandal, Katarzyna Arciszewska-Stępień, the director of “two”, decided to speak out. In an interview with the portal, she emphasized that she made the decision independently and, contrary to rumors, did not intend to limit students’ access to the film. Contrary. She assured that those who would like to go to the screening of “The Green Border”, but only after the upcoming elections. – There is no censorship here and there will never be any. There will be a Parents’ Council on Thursday, September 21, I will inform them about the situation and my decision. We will go to the “Green Border”, but after the elections. I decided that those students who wanted to go would go, she emphasized, adding that the media debate on this issue was groundless. – I know what the repercussions are, politics was added to this, and I was somehow involved in it – she concluded.
