“20,000 species of bees” and “Close your eyes”, out of the Oscar race

“20,000 species of bees”, the first feature film by Estibaliz Urresola, and “Cerrar los ojos”, the first feature film directed by Víctor Erice thirty years after “El sol del membrillo”, will not finally be in the race for the Oscars. The Spanish Film Academy has announced today which film it will present to the Hollywood Academy as a candidate for the Oscar for best foreign film, and we have learned that the chosen one will be “The Snow Society”, by Catalan director Juan Antonio Bayona.
The film, which recreates the moments after an accident in the Andes of the plane that was transporting a rugby team to Chile (some survivors ate the remains of their deceased teammates), has won the vote of the members. from the Academy to “20,000 species of bees” and “Close your eyes.”
Once that path is closed, “20,000 species of bees” will open on the 22nd the Zinemira section, dedicated to Basque cinema, at the Zinemaldia in San Sebastián, to round off its successful run in cinemas and festivals (actress Sofia Otero won the Bear Silver for best performance at the Berlinale).
For its part, “Close your eyes” can be seen at the Zinemaldia on September 29, when it will also hit theaters, after the Donostia award ceremony for its director, Víctor Erice.
