‘The Snow Society‘, by JA Bayona will represent the Spanish cinema in the next edition of the Oscar awardsnumber 96, in the category of Best International Filmas announced by the Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences. The film has managed to come out better positioned than the other two nominated titles ‘Close your eyes’, by Víctor Erice, and ‘20,000 species of bees’, by Estibaliz Urresola, in the second vote of academics.

Thus, the story of the tragic plane accident that took place in 1972 and in which only 29 of the 45 passengers who were on board the flight survivedcould jump to the international level. It could, since the reality is that it still has to pass the screening of a specific foreign language film committee. The winning ribbon will be sent to hollywood to be screened along with the other finalists. The members of a preliminary committee will choose a shortlist of 15 and, finally, the committee responsible for the nominations will hold a secret ballot to decide which five films will compete for the Oscar.

It is worth remembering that in the previous edition the three chosen were ‘Alcarràs’ (Carla Simón), ‘as beasts‘ (Rodrigo Sorogoyen) and ‘Five Little Wolves’ (Alauda Ruiz de Arzúa). However, Carla Simón’s film, which was the finalist on that occasion, was left out of the Oscar race and did not participate in the awards. When will it be known if there will be Spanish representation in the 2024 international gala?

The Academyof Cinematographic Arts and Sciences reveals the shortlist months before the official announcement. This year the voting for the shortlisted candidates will be held between December 14 and 18. The next date on the calendar is December 21, when this shortlist will be published. Voting to form the lists of nominees will take place between the January 11 and 16, 2024 to, a week later, announce the list of Oscar nominees on January 23, 2024. The Hollywood Film Awards ceremony will take place on March 12, 2024.
