A renowned folk singer has died. Roger Whittaker was 87 years old

One of Britain’s most famous folk singers, Roger Whittaker, has died. He was known for the song “Durham Town” and his unique ability to whistle the melody. He died at the age of 87.

The artist died on September 13 in a hospital in southern France. The information was confirmed by the family, who issued a statement quoted by the German tabloid “Bild”. The causes of death were not disclosed. The artist moved to France with his wife in 2012, when he decided to retire from music.

From time to time he appeared on television, giving interviews. In 2014, in an interview, he admitted that despite his retirement, he had written 18 new songs and joked: “I still whistle very well.”

Roger Whittaker is dead. What was he famous for?

Whittaker was born in Nairobi, Kenya in 1936 to English parents. His parents moved there after his father’s motorcycle accident and he was then advised to live in a warmer climate. Whittaker studied medicine after completing his military service in Kenya. During his studies, he sang in local clubs and wrote his own songs.

After a year and a half he abandoned his medical studies and in 1959 moved to Bangor University in Wales to obtain a teaching qualification. He studied zoology, biochemistry and marine biology there. Already as a student, he began composing songs and during that time he recorded his first single, “The Charge of the Light Brigade”.

The artist’s best-known songs are “The Last Farewell”, “New World in the Morning” and “Durham Town”. He could sing in several languages, including: in German and French, which allowed it to reach a wide audience, especially in Germany, where it was particularly popular. According to his website, he has sold almost 50 million records worldwide.
