Elżbieta Starostecka was the undisputed star of the Polish People’s Republic. She gained audience recognition for her role in the cult film “The Leper” by Jerzy Hoffman. She played, among others, Barbara’s sister in the cult film and series by Jerzy Antczak, which she still considers to be the greatest achievements in her career.

However, she is remembered by viewers as Stefania Rudnicka from the film adaptation of “The Leper” by Helena Mniszkówna, directed by . Her heroine falls madly in love with the orderly Waldemar, but due to the diametric differences in social status, the relationship between these two is not accepted by the surroundings. This ultimately leads to tragedy. The film misalliance received a lot of positive reviews and awards, also bringing the actress the Golden Grape statuette and the status of hope of Polish cinematography. However, Starostecka did not meet the expectations set for her by the world of cinema. After “The Leper”, she appeared on the big screen twice more, the last time in “Przypadek Pekosińskiego” in 1983, and then withdrew from public life to focus on her family, as at the age of 21 she married Włodzimierz Korcz. From time to time, however, she reminded viewers of herself with episodes in television productions, but she did not form a permanent relationship with any of them and finally, in 2014, after her role in “Doctors”, she disappeared from show business.

Almost 47 years have passed since the premiere of “The Leper”, and many still fondly remember the moving story about the love between a poor girl and an aristocrat. The actress does not hide the fact that she is flattered, but fame makes her a bit embarrassed. – I prefer a quiet life than fame. I don’t want to attract attention. I never wanted to be a star because it wasn’t for me. I don’t want there to be too many of me, and the television keeps repeating “Leper” and “Nights and Days”.
