in recent years it has undergone a complicated transition process. In 2020, he announced that he was a transgender person, but for several years he had appeared less frequently on the big screen. , but it was a series, not a full-length film. This situation will soon change, as “Close to You” will be released in cinemas – a production about a trans man played by Elliot Page. This is the actor’s first film in years and the first one in which he will truly be himself.
Elliot Page returns to cinema screens after six years
The last film with Elliot Page hit theaters in 2017. It was a horror drama with zombies in the wrong way, because it showed “cured” people, and Elliot played the role of Abby, a young mother trying to survive in a cruel post-apocalyptic world with her son. Three years after the premiere of “The Cured”, Elliot announced on social media that he was transgender and began the difficult transition process, temporarily disappearing from the big screen. He remained only in smaller series roles(e).
In “Close to You” Elliot Page plays a role close to his heart – a trans man who decides to return to his family home, even though there he is not fully accepted for his decisions. This will be his first visit after the transition. In a recent interview for “Entertainment Weekly”, Page particularly recalled the opening scene of the production – when his hero wakes up and walks to the window. Elliot Page suggested to the director that he would show himself without a shirt, which would make the scene look more natural.
To show this guy feeling comfortable in his own body when he wakes up – that means a lot to me. I never thought I would feel this way, but it was good to play it – he said, adding that the role of Sam was “liberating” for him and only now he enters the set without stress and tears and devotes himself to work.
In a few interviews during the transition, Elliot Page recalled when he played roles that were not consistent with his inner self. His work on the set of “Inception” and “X-Men: The Last Stand” resulted in depression and anxiety. The clothes his roles required him to wear made him not feel like himself.
And although the film itself does not receive very encouraging reviews (the script is accused of, among other things, being long-winded), the leading role of Elliot Page is highly appreciated. Foreign critics who have already had the opportunity to see “Close to You” point out that he is the most honest of all the people appearing in the production.
