As every year, he presented the Awards of the Minister of Culture and National Heritage for contributing to the development, dissemination and protection of culture. The awards were handed out last Monday in Warsaw. Apart from the journalist, the list of award winners included, among others: and .
Piotr Gliński presented the annual awards of the Minister of Culture
The Minister of Culture’s award was presented in 16 categories and two special categories – for lifetime achievement and the award named after Tomasz Merta “Between literature and history”. The awards are not related to the work of the recipients in the last year and, in fact, correspond more to lifetime achievement awards than to work in the last 12 months. Who received the commemorative statuette?
Literature category
Andrzej Sapkowski came especially to the gala at the Kubicki Arcades in Warsaw, where he received an award in the “literature” category from the Minister of Culture. Although Sapkowski has not written a new book for several years, his Witcher saga is talked about all over the world – thanks to the games and the series, which will soon have a fourth season.
Receiving the award, Sapkowski sarcastically said:
I would like to thank the entire distinguished body, and I think it was a large one, that awarded this award. I would especially like to thank those from this body who voted for me. Greetings to those who didn’t vote for me. I bow low and also greet those who were on the list but died in the battle. I also greet and bow low to those who were not on the list, or perhaps should have been – concluded the writer.
Movie category
Dorota Kobiela-Welchman received the distinction in the film category. The director and screenwriter is getting ready for another hot awards season – her animated film “The Peasants” is receiving rave reviews after its premiere in Toronto. Her “Loving Vincent” narrowly lost the Oscar race for Best Animated Feature Film in 2018. We keep our fingers crossed for an Oscar nomination for the film adaptation of Reymont’s “Peasants” this year.
Award named after Tomasz Merta “Between literature and history”
In this category, the distinction was awarded to none other than Rafał Ziemkiewicz, a publicist widely known for the so-called “Ziemkiewicz’s risercz”. In recent years, Ziemkiewicz has been mainly concerned with , which was justified by “views that are contrary to British values and offensive to others.” Award named after Tomasz Merta Ziemkiewicz received for his book “Great Poland”.
