The award-winning film “20,000 species of bees”, by Estibaliz Urresola, and “Cerrar los ojos”, which Víctor Erice premiered at the Cannes Festival, are two of the three films that are competing to be the one finally chosen by the Spanish Academy to be presented to the Hollywood Academy.
On September 20 we will know which film is finally chosen as a candidate for the Spanish Film Academy, and it will be the Hollywood Academy that will decide if this film is finally among the titles chosen as candidates for best foreign film.
The Oscar awards ceremony will be held on March 10 in Los Angeles (early morning on March 11 in the Basque Country).
The Llodian filmmaker Estibaliz Urresola premiered the feature film “20,000 species of bees” at the Berlinale, where its protagonist Sofía Otero won the Silver Bear for best performance. In addition, this exciting and revealing film, which tells the transition of an eight-year-old girl and everything around her, also won the award for best film and best supporting actress (Patricia López Arnaiz) at the film festival of Malaga.
THIS IS WHAT WE WRITE AFTER WATCHING “20,000 SPECIES OF BEES”
“20,000 species of bees”: honey and stings
“Close your eyes”, for its part, is Víctor Erice’s first fiction feature film in thirty years, and it was premiered at the Cannes festival, out of competition. The film tells the story of an actor (Coronado) who disappears during filming and whose body is never found. After 22 years, a television program evokes the figure of the actor and broadcasts the last scenes in which he participated, filmed by a close friend of his.
A film about identity and memory with many references that demonstrate Erice’s tastes, from Juan Marsé to Borges and even self-references to his own films, the most obvious being the presence of Ana Torrent in the story and with a character called Ana , again.
Torrent accompanied Erice when she was just a girl in her first adventure as a director, “The Spirit of the Beehive” (1973), a film that won the Golden Shell in San Sebastián and immediately became a cult title. Precisely, Zinemaldia will present Erice with his honorary award, the Donostia award, on September 29.
Both films have the participation of EITB.
