was honored on Saturday evening during the grand gala closing the 80th Venice International Film Festival. , touching on the difficult issue of refugees trying at all costs to get to Europe through the Polish-Belarusian border.
Agnieszka Holland in touching words from the stage in Venice
Agnieszka Holland gave a short but moving speech when accepting the award. She talked about the situation of refugees not only on our Polish-Belarusian border, but also in Italy, which is struggling with the refugee crisis, among others. on the island of Lampedusa.
It wasn’t an easy movie to make – some people can imagine it, some people can’t. I want to thank the producer, directors and the entire crew. More than 60,000 people died trying to get to Europe. They are still hiding in the forests, deprived of dignity, human rights and security. Some of them will die, not because we have no way to help them, but because we do not want to help them. But both here, in Europe and in Poland, there are people who help and who know that their first duty is to be human. To all activists, people helping, the Granica Group, medics, organizations – from Poland to Lampedusa – thank you! – said Agnieszka Holland.
This is Agnieszka Holland’s third nomination at the Venice Film Festival, but her first award here. Although we expected that “Zielona Granica” would ultimately receive the Golden Lion, the main prize of the competition, Agnieszka Holland received the Special Jury Prize. This year the Golden Lion went to “Poor Creatures” by Yorgos Lanthimos.
