Iwona Schymalla’s career began in the early 1990s, when she won the announcer competition. She started with Educational Television, later she joined Program 1 and started magazines such as “Coffee or Tea?” and “Between Earth and Sky.” He has received many awards, including: Wiktor and the Golden Cross of Merit.
She had different goals with the president of TVP. This became the cause of the conflict
The cooperation was successful for many years. In July 2009, Iwona Schymalla became program director for the first time, but she was dismissed from this position a few months later. She took up the position again in October 2010, and finally resigned in July 2011. What were the reasons behind her departure from the station? Schymalla justified her decision by the “internal functioning of the company”, while the TVP management board claimed that greater expectations were placed on it, which it was unable to meet. Years later, in the book “Zawodzie Spikera”, she confessed what the actual reason was.
When I accepted the position of director of Program 1, I decided to eliminate political sinecures. In 2011, when the parliamentary elections were approaching, I was primarily interested in maintaining the independence of the antenna and its main news service, i.e. News.
– When taking over the position of program director, Schymalla had a mission to make television independent of politics. However, the then president of the station, Juliusz Braun, had a different goal. He put pressure on her to employ people belonging to the so-called party key, which she was firmly against. Finally, she decided to submit her resignation, which was ultimately not accepted because, as she explains, it conflicted with the “ongoing election campaign.”
She left TVP amid a scandal. Years later, she revealed the real reasons
Shortly thereafter, she accidentally learned that Braun was planning to dismiss her from her position. She sensed it, but she didn’t think it would happen the next day. When she was called in for the interview, she knew what was coming. She then heard that the cooperation was not going well. However, she received an alternative offer to stay at the station on a one-year contract, which may be terminated at any time without giving a reason. – The offer was bizarre and despicable for a journalist who had worked at Telewizja Polska for nearly twenty years and twice served as director and editor-in-chief of the most important antenna – bitterly explaining why she refused.
Schymalla claimed from the beginning that the notice of termination she received contained a lot of lies about her and the work she performed. She wanted to speak out about how she was treated. The media first sought interviews with her en masse, only to then suddenly start giving them up without any explanation. She knew that it was influenced by the authorities. – Right after I resigned from TVP, our car was damaged. We found threats under the windshield wipers and our house was invaded. […] We know who did it – she said about the intimidation attempts. After leaving the station, she did not find employment with a competitor because other directors were afraid that she would compete with them for the position. Today she does not regret that her fate turned out this way. – Television is a closed chapter in my life. I’m dealing with other things now and I’m not complaining about boredom, he says. Currently, Schymalla conducts interviews for the Medexpress portal, runs the Żyjmy Zdrowo Foundation and co-runs the “Heart and Reason” organization.
