And although the cards sold in kiosks today may be worth this much only in a few or a dozen years, it is worth looking at the current collections of children and young adults, because even there you can sometimes find gems worth really good money.
Pokemon card sold for $168,000
Right now, some of the Pokemon cards your children have may be worth up to several hundred zlotys. The problem, of course, is that kids not only often have fakes in their albums and boxes, but these cards are also not of impeccable quality – and only these are the most valued by adult collectors.
It was no different with a Charizard card from 1999, sold a few days ago via PWCC, a marketplace bringing together card collectors from around the world. Charizard from the first edition reached the price of $168,000 – over PLN 700,000 (the price has gone up significantly in recent days). And it’s still less than experts expected.
A piece of paper sold for an astronomical sum reached such a price because it is extremely rare. Not only is the 1999 Charizard very old (which makes it rare in itself), but it also belongs to a rare group of cards printed without the distinctive shadow under the image. In addition, it also has the “gem mint” status, which means it is virtually without any flaws (this is difficult when children take their cards to kindergarten).
The $168,000 paid for Charizard is not much at all. The same card, but of slightly lower quality (mint status), in 2022 reached a staggering sum of 420,000. Yes, dollars.
I guess you no longer have any doubts whether it is worth taking a look at the albums and boxes in which your children keep their treasures. Perhaps there really is a real treasure there.
