Critics from around the world delighted with “Green Border”: A blow straight to the weave. Holland goes for the Golden Lion

The first reviews of Agnieszka Holland’s latest film “The Green Border” about the refugee crisis have appeared online. The picture competes for the Golden Lion at the festival in Venice, it has a good chance of being awarded.

She presented her latest work at the 80th Venice International Film Festival. The film “Green Border” is a serious candidate to win the most important award of the event – the Golden Lion. Alberto Barbera, the artistic director of the event, pointed out that the film could stir up the second part of the festival. The first reviews of the picture are very positive, and the indignation of the Polish right against the production will only encourage many to watch it.

Agnieszka Holland’s “Green Border” appreciated. There are already the first reviews of the film

30 years ago, Agnieszka Holland told the story of a Jewish boy who tries to survive the Nazi rule in the work Europa, Europa. In 2021, the director sadly noted that “the Holocaust vaccine stopped working” and clearly expressed her opposition to the actions against refugees at the Polish border. “It’s not just about talking about the past, about the suffering of millions, but also about looking around and realizing where we are today,” Holland emphasized. The fate of the refugees transferred between Poland and Belarus was shown by the director in the film “Green border”.

And contrary to the opinions of Polish politicians, she did it very well. Film critics from around the world praise Holland for her sensitivity, courage, intelligence and valuable analysis of the problem. Wendy Ide of screendaily.com writes that while there has been no shortage of films about Europe’s current refugee crisis over the last decade, Holland’s one is one of the best on the subject. Jessica Kiang of Variety admits that the picture captured her heart: “It’s a social critique wrapped in barbed wire of strong, intelligent filmmaking.” Peter Bradshaw, who writes for the Daily Mirror, the Guardian and the Observer, calls The Green Border “a blow to the weave” and argues that the picture is an important cinematic testimony to what is happening in Europe today.

Although in Poland some circles try to convince viewers that “Green border” is pre-election agitation, critics deny it. Adam Solomons from indiewire.com points out in his review that Holland has always been “a director more European than Polish”, and her latest film is another proof that she uses a much broader context in her productions. Tomasz-Marcin Wrona from TVN24 also notes that the director’s image tries to be universal: “The filmmaker avoids specifying the time of the story told in order to emphasize the common experience of refugees, which we have been witnessing for almost a decade.”

It is true that Agnieszka Holland directly criticizes the conference of Mariusz Błaszczak and Mariusz Kamiński, where migrants were suggested pedophilic and zoophilic behavior. However, the director points out that the European Union is also to blame for the terrible fate of the refugees. However, as Dawid Dudko from the Onet editorial office writes, the director does not propose a specific way to solve the crisis, she only “cries out that it cannot be death”.
